THE ‘NANIMA’ PROJECT

In October 2019 I was contracted by ORANA ARTS to present an 8 day series of tree-carving workshops at the Macquarie Correctional Centre, just outside Wellington in NSW. The institution, unfortunately was in lock-down mode when I arrived and a community project was then set up so that both ORANA ARTS and myself could honour our contracts. The work for this project was carried out an the “NANIMA’ Aboriginal settlement, located on the outskirts of Wellington. I became an Artist in residence, working with community to develop designs for and then to carve 2 symbolic carved trees that would be erected at NANIMA.

The concept of developing a Culturally based project has emerged from my time spent in Wellington. This new concept will continue in 2020, where community involvement will gain further appreciation and exposure.
